Ability Advocacy – Disability Awareness Workshops at Transnet

Article 8 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities highlights the importance of challenging stereotypes and prejudices relating to people with disabilities through campaigning, education, media and awareness-raising programmes.

In line with our commitment to make the public aware of the rights, capabilities and contributions of people with disabilities, APD’s sensitisation team was invited by Transnet to present two information sessions to their staff and workers. It was heartening to hear the company is making progress toward their workplace equity targets for disabled employees.

There was a great turnout for both sessions and the feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive. Our presenters spoke passionately about the daily challenges they have to deal with and also shared some of their personal success stories.

We look forward to returning in 2018 with talks underway for APD to present a series of follow-up full day workshops.
