The Coega Drivers Training Programme gives new hope to persons with disabilities.
In 2013 APD was approached by Coega Development Corporation to provide an opportunity for persons with disabilities from our organization to obtain their learners and drivers licenses.
The first step was for the applicants to start attending learners’ classes which was facilitated in APD’s boardroom. The lessons lasted for two weeks following which APD arranged transport for the learners to make bookings for their learners license tests at the local traffic department.

Applicants who successfuly passed their learners tests then progressed to the second phase of training on CDC’s driving simulators. The simulators allowed the applicants to become comfortable behind the wheel and to learn the rules of the road by simulating real-world driving situations. Once applicants were deemed to be competent they began their on-road training in specially adapted CDC vehicles with qualified CDC driving instructors.
The final step was to assist competent learners with bookings for their drivers licenses.
We are extremely proud to report that in the past year 7 persons with disabilities have obtained their drivers licenses and another 15 have acquired their learner’s licenses.
One of the greatest challenges facing persons with disabilities is a lack of accessible public transport. We thank Coega Development Corporation for developing this fantastic initiative and for partnering with us in changing the lives of people with disabilities.
