To commemorate World Hypertension Day we arranged a Health Day for our people who in many cases due to their disabilities are unable to access public transport or cannot afford private transport costs to get to health facilities in their communities.
Nurses from the Department of Health and Dischem (Baywest) were invited to do the necessary health screenings. The DOH nurses screened our people for hypertension, blood sugar levels, HIV Aids and TB whilst their dietician tested BMI levels and gave instructions on healthy eating habits. A special word of thanks to Sister Shirley and Dischem (Baywest) for kindly sponsoring 50 cholesterol testing strips.
The success of this programme is clearly illustrated by the fact that there were many instances where high levels of blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure were recorded. In these cases our people were referred to their nearest clinic for follow ups with the possibility of them being placed on chronic medication to better manage their health conditions.
